They learned it would takea club-record fee to get the player out of Bayern Munich.
10.20: Everton, Newcastle and Southampton are all keen on Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.

The Egypt star is joining in a deal that could reach £39m.
And Liverpool are putting him through his paces before confirming the transfer later today.

Gazzetta Dello Sport say a move for Perisic is at an impasse as Inter and Man Utd play hardball over a transfer fee.

01:30: Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk could go on strike to force a move to Liverpool.
That's the opinion of Anfield legend John Aldridge.
He told the Sunday Word: "Tapping up goes on all the time in the game and even if Liverpool went a bit far in their pursuit of Van Dijk before they spoke to Southampton, I don’t believe this transfer story is dead in the water.
"Van Dijk needs to make the next move and I reckon he will tell Southampton that he wants out and he wants to go to Liverpool.
"Players and their agents hold all the power these days and if he says he won’t kick another ball for Southampton and demands a move, it will happen."

Bakayoko, 22, played a starring for Monaco last season - both domestically and in Europe.

According to the Daily Mail, the Blues are nearing a £35m deal to sign the France international.
And his arrival could apparently see Nemanja Matic leave Stamford Bridge.
He was a regular in Chelsea's title-winning midfield last term.
But the Daily Mail believe Antonio Conte will listen to offers for the Serbia international if he lands Bakayoko.
And Matic is said to be keen on a move to Manchester United, where he would be reunited with Jose Mourinho.

10.45pm: Diego Costa is ready to dig his heels in and stay at Chelsea until he seals his dream move back to Atletico Madrid.
Starsport understands the Spain striker’s ready to go head-to-head with boss Antonio Conte by refusing to move to anyone but his old club.
Atletico’s transfer ban won’t be lifted until January with AC Milan and Juventus both keen on taking Costa to Serie A.
But Costa does not want to uproot and move to Italy and it is now looking increasingly likely he will stay at Stamford Bridge for the first half of the season.
That scenario would leave Conte red-faced, who told Conte, 28, he was no longer part of his plans in a mobile phone text message.
10.25pm: Kylian Mbappe has a ‘very good profile’ to play for Arsenal in the future, according to Robert Pires.
The Monaco striker is in demand this summer after a sensational season at Monaco saw him score 26 goals in all competitions.
“Kylian Mbappe is a great player with a very good future,” he told Sky Sports.
“He's young and he still needs to prove himself, but he has played very well in Ligue 1 and the Champions League for Monaco and also for the national team.
“He has a very good profile to play with Arsenal but a lot of clubs want to buy him, especially Real Madrid. He is also very, very expensive.”
9.30pm: Chief scout Graham Carr has left Newcastle by mutual consent.
Graham was instrumental in identifying players from across the UK and Europe, including signings Yohan Cabaye, Matthieu Debuchy, Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko, Papiss Cisse and Cheick Tiote.
Managing Director Lee Charnley said: “It has been my pleasure to work with Graham over the last seven years as both a colleague and a friend. He can count some of Newcastle’s most successful players in recent years as his ‘finds’.
“Everyone connected with Newcastle United wishes Graham the very best for the future.”
9pm: Arsenal now want a whopping £20m for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny this summer.
The Gunners are willing to let the Poland international leave but only if their valuation is met.
Juventus have seen a cheeky £4m bid turned down for the keeper who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Roma.
And after Jordan Pickford’s transfer to Everton, Arsenal have upped their valuation from £13m to £20m, according to The Sun.
That’s despite Szczesny having just one year left on his current contract at the Emirates.

8.15pm: Borussia Dortmund want Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future sorted by the end of July.
SportBild claim the club want the matter closed with enough time to find a replacement.
The Gabon international, last season’s top scorer in the Bundesliga, has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool among others.
Dortmund's deadline may force those interested in Aubameyang to make their move now.
7.40pm: Alvaro Morata is waiting for Manchester United to make a firm offer.
Starsport understands United are keen on the 24-year-old, with Jose Mourinho a huge admirer of the Spain international.

"There has been no break-up with Dani, but motivation is fundamental for any footballer."
6.20pm: John Terry is on the verge of signing a £60,000-a-week contract to join Aston Villa.
The Chelsea legend is ready to reject offers from the Premier League to play for Steve Bruce in the Championship.
Swansea, Bournemouth and West Brom have all held talks with Terry since he left the Blues at the end of the season.
Tianjin Quanjian are also understood to have offered the 36-year-old a lucrative deal to play in the Chinese Super League.
But The Sun claim Terry has decided on joining Villa as he wants the different challenge of earning promotion to the Premier League.
Villa are prepared to offer the former England captain £3m-a-year with a potential bonus of £2m if Bruce’s side make it out of the Championship.
5.45pm: Manchester United have agreed a £9.7m deal to sell Adnan Januzaj to Real Sociedad.
The 22-year-old is not in the plans of Jose Mourinho and he will be allowed to leave Old Trafford.
Januzaj spent last season on loan at Sunderland but failed to make much of an impact as the Black Cats were relegated from the Premier League.
The winger has just one year left on his contract at United but will leave for the La Liga side, according to France Football.
Personal terms are still being discussed with Januzaj negotiating his wages.
5.05pm: Mohamed Salah is expected to complete his £39m move to Liverpool tomorrow.
The Egyptian winger is set to undergo a medical on Merseyside and then tie up the remaining details on a four-year contract believed to be worth around £90,000-a-week.
The Reds will pay Roma an initial fee up front and with add-ons the deal could be worth £39m, which will make Salah the club’s most expensive signing.
The fee would surpass the £35m the Reds paid Newcastle for Andy Carroll in 2011.
Salah, 25, turned down a move to Anfield in 2014 in favour of joining Chelsea in a £11m deal from Basel.

4.20pm: Kylian Mbappe is considering a move to Arsenal this summer as a stepping-stone to an eventual switch to Real Madrid.
The 18-year-old is in high demand this summer after a sensational season at Monaco which saw him net 26 goals and provide 14 assists in all competitions.
Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool as well as Real have all been linked with raids for Mbappe.
And French newspaper Le Parisien say Mbappe is very interested in moving to the Gunners because of Arsene Wenger’s record with young French players.
“Wenger, he is a great,” a source said.
“If Mbappe were to sign for Arsenal tomorrow, it would be for him.
“He knows how to produce youngsters and especially former French international team forwards, Thierry Henry and Nicolas Anelka. Only playing in the Europa League is not an obstacle for him.”
The report claims Arsenal would only be a temporary destination though with a move to the likes of Real Madrid targeted in the future.

3.40pm: Manchester United have told Juventus they will not sell Matteo Darmian to them on the cheap.
The Serie A champions have identified the full-back as a replacement for Dani Alves who looks set for Manchester City.
United signed Darmian for £12m from Torino in 2015 but Starsport understand they are determined to make a profit and will demand £20m for the 27-year-old.
The Italy international was in and out of Jose Mourinho’s team last season but he did make 29 appearances in all competitions.
3.10pm: West Ham United have confirmed young defender Reece Oxford will join German side Borussia Monchengladbach on loan for next season.
Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Reece to continue his development and experience top level European football on a regular basis.
